GEO vs SEO

SEO optimizes to rank links in Google Search; GEO optimizes to get AI engines like ChatGPT and Gemini to mention and recommend your brand inside the generated answer. They share fundamentals, but the goal and the metrics differ.

Updated on September 8, 2026

GEO and SEO pursue the same goal —being found— by different routes. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) wants your page among Google's results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) wants your brand inside the answer an AI model generates. The first optimizes for a link; the second, for a mention.

What do they share?

  • Useful, original content: both penalize filler.
  • A fast, crawlable site: if the bot cannot read the page, it helps neither.
  • Structured data: schema.org helps both Google and AI crawlers.
  • Domain authority: links and mentions from trusted sites count for both.

How do they differ?

  • Unit of success: SEO = a click to the site; GEO = a mention within the answer.
  • Format: SEO tolerates long prose; GEO rewards extractable question-and-answer format.
  • Entity signals: in GEO, Wikidata, press and brand consistency matter far more.
  • Measurement: SEO uses Search Console; GEO requires running prompts and analyzing answers (see AI visibility).
  • Volatility: Google rankings are relatively stable; AI visibility shifts with every model version.

Do you have to pick one?

No. SEO still drives traffic and its technical base helps GEO. The recommended approach is to keep SEO and add GEO as a new channel, measuring each with its own metrics. "AEO vs SEO" raises the same discussion under a different name — see AEO.

Does GEO replace SEO?+
No. They are complementary channels. SEO captures people searching Google; GEO captures people asking ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. More and more buying journeys go through the second, but the first is still large.
Do I need good SEO before doing GEO?+
It helps, but it is not an absolute requirement. A fast, crawlable site with structured data serves both. However, GEO also depends on signals SEO does not prioritize, such as a brand's Wikidata entity and press mentions.
Can I use the same tool for SEO and GEO?+
Traditional SEO tools measure link ranking. GEO needs a tool that runs prompts against the models and analyzes the answers. Lumen AI is built for that, with a focus on the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking market.

Add GEO to your strategy and measure your AI visibility.
