AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing a brand and its content to appear inside the direct answers produced by answer engines —ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode—. The goal is not a click to your site, but to be the answer (or part of it) at the moment the user asks.
AEO or GEO?
The two terms describe the same thing and are usually used interchangeably. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) stresses the generative models; AEO stresses the direct-answer format. Tools like Semrush and Ahrefs adopted "AEO"; others adopted "GEO". The strategy and the metrics are identical.
What does an AEO strategy include?
- Question-and-answer content with concrete, attributable facts.
- Structured data (FAQPage, Organization, Article) so the crawler understands the page.
- Entity and authority signals: Wikidata, press, reviews, third-party mentions.
- An llms.txt file that guides AI agents.
- AI visibility monitoring: mention rate, position and Share of Voice.
AEO vs SEO
SEO optimizes for link ranking in Google; AEO optimizes for being cited inside a generated answer. They share technical fundamentals, but AEO demands more extractable content and stronger entity signals. See GEO vs SEO.
