AEO: The Answer Engine Optimization Guide

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the practice of optimizing a brand to appear inside the direct answers generated by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. In practice it is the same discipline as GEO, with a different emphasis.

If you are evaluating agency or tooling proposals, you have probably seen both terms — AEO and GEO — used almost interchangeably, sometimes in the same document. Nobody is at fault: they emerged in parallel between 2023 and 2024 and describe the same goal. This guide explains what AEO is, why two names exist, and what to actually do.

What is AEO?

AEO is the practice of optimizing a brand and its content to appear, be cited and be recommended inside the direct answers produced by answer engines. The goal is not a click to your site but to be the answer — or part of it — at the exact moment the user asks.

Are AEO and GEO the same thing?

Yes, in practice. Both describe the same work: getting an AI engine to mention and recommend your brand. **AEO** stresses the format — the direct answer, with no list of links. **GEO** stresses the technology — generative models. Semrush and Ahrefs adopted "AEO" for their marketing; other platforms adopted "GEO". The tactics, the metrics and the day-to-day work are identical. If a proposal offers "AEO and GEO" as two separate services with two prices, that is a red flag.

What counts as an answer engine

  • ChatGPT and ChatGPT Search — the highest volume of conversational queries.
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode — the generated answer above the classic results.
  • Gemini — grounded in Google Search.
  • Perplexity — designed from the start as an answer engine with visible citations.
  • Claude and Copilot — lower commercial query volume, but growing inside work environments.

How an answer is assembled

Understanding the mechanism is what separates an AEO tactic from a hunch. The process has four stages, and you can intervene in each one.

  1. 1
Decomposition (query fanout): The engine turns one question into several internal searches. A commercial query fans out into sub-queries by product, attribute and location. The more of those sub-queries your content answers, the better your odds of being retrieved.
  2. 2
Retrieval: It pulls passages from the live web and from model memory. Crawlability, indexing and whether authority domains mention you all decide this stage.
  3. 3
Synthesis: It drafts the answer, prioritizing fragments it can reuse without reinterpreting: definitions, lists, question-and-answer pairs, sourced data.
  4. 4
Citation and attribution: It names brands and, depending on the engine, links sources. To be named you must be a recognizable entity; to be cited, a crawlable source.

The four levers of AEO

  1. 1
Direct-answer format: Turn your customers' real questions into question-formatted headings and answer them in the first sentence. Mark the blocks with `FAQPage` schema. Highest return per unit of effort.
  2. 2
A clear entity: Wikidata, `Organization` schema, an identical description across every profile. Without this, the engine can cite your content without naming your brand — the worst outcome of all.
  3. 3
Third-party authority: Mentions on the domains the engine already consults for your category: press, comparisons, directories, review platforms. Links are not required; being in the text is enough.
  4. 4
Technical accessibility: A fast, crawlable site, content in the HTML, AI crawlers not blocked in `robots.txt`, and an llms.txt summarizing what you are.

AEO vs SEO

SEO optimizes to rank a link in a list; AEO optimizes to be cited inside a generated answer. They share technical fundamentals — crawling, structured data, useful content — but AEO demands more extractable content and far stronger entity signals. The full comparison lives in the GEO vs SEO guide, which applies equally to this discussion.

How AEO is measured

  • Mention rate across your key questions, per engine.
  • Position within the answer: first, mid-list, or last among the options.
  • Share of Voice against every brand named.
  • Sentiment: how the engine describes you when it names you.
  • Precision: whether it correctly understands what you do, or confuses you with another company.
  • Cited sources: which domains back the answer — your digital-PR target list.

A four-phase implementation plan

  1. 1
Diagnosis (week 1): Define 15–25 real questions and measure your current presence on each engine. Note who appears instead of you.
  2. 2
Entity (weeks 2–3): Wikidata, Organization schema, description unification, llms.txt. One-off work with permanent effect.
  3. 3
Format (weeks 4–8): Reformat your highest-traffic existing pages before writing new ones: FAQs, answer in the first sentence, sourced data.
  4. 4
Authority and measurement (weeks 8+): Digital PR aimed at the domains the engine cites, plus weekly tracking to confirm the series is rising.
Are AEO and GEO two different services?+
No. They are two names for the same discipline. AEO emphasizes the direct-answer format and GEO the generative models, but the tactics and metrics are identical.
Why do two terms exist then?+
They emerged in parallel in 2023-2024 and different vendors adopted one or the other to differentiate commercially. There is no real technical difference behind it.
Does AEO work for a local business?+
Yes, with different emphasis: for a local business, Google Business Profile, reviews and local directories matter far more than product comparisons.
Can I do AEO without changing my site?+
Partially. Entity signals and third-party mentions are built off-site. But direct-answer format and structured data require touching the content — and they are the highest-return lever.
How do I know my AEO is working?+
By measuring mention rate and Share of Voice across a fixed question set, week over week. A single manual query cannot separate real improvement from the model's normal variability.
